For several years, the residents of ten small Andean villages situated in the Totoras and Rumichaca Basins, have taken the initiative to develop several conservation activities in an effort to protect the environment—specifically in regards to the care of watersheds, forestation, and reforestation. For instance, they have planted more than 140,000 pine seedlings, slowing the indiscriminate felling of trees. These actions, framed in the concept of the Planting and Harvesting of Water, in effect promote the catchment of water from the microbasins that form the streams that then feed the Huallabamba Canal, the water transfer infrastructure that supplies water to the Valley of Motupe.
